Can’t Repair XP – What To Do If XP Fails

Posted on 03. Aug, 2009 by in computer repair, Software

PC Repair. In Minutes.

It’s crunch time. Your computer was working fine and now it’s down. You may really need the programs and data on your computer and nuking the system and starting over again may not be an option.

Repair Problems

Windows XP provides a repair install option that allows you to boot from your XP installation CD and fix your ailing computer. Unfortunately, they also provide a repair console which is NOT what you ordinarily want to use.

The best instructions for doing the repair install are provided by Michael Stevens Tech . Your best chance at succeeding is to follow the instructions there. It’s can be a long and complex process, but you may get it going.

However, even when you follow their instructions, there are often situations where it fails:

  • Third party drivers may call for a floppy drive and most machines don’t have floppies anymore
  • You don’t have the CD, and even if you get a new one, you will have a problem with the product key
  • You don’t get repair option. System corruption has advanced so much that the damaged operating system is not visible
  • You get a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) on selecting repair console or other major options
  • You get a series of messages such as:
Windows could not load the installer for Media
Windows could not load the installer for Display
Windows could not load the installer for Net
Windows could not load the installer for CDROM
Windows could not load the installer for Computer
Windows could not load the installer for Diskdrive
Windows could not load the installer for hdc
    etc.

Many will advise you to give up at this point, reformat your computer and reinstall your operating system. If you have the installation CDs for all your software and all their keys, you are one of the privileged few.

Repair Options

There is another option. Reimage repair can repair your computer automatically while leaving all your data and programs intact. It scans your system comparing it to a huge sophisticated database that contains information about all components and major applications used by XP. It then compiles a list of changes and replaces anything that is missing or damaged. It removes anything that is harmful or malicious. A full report of changes is provided.

It costs a small amount but it’s well worth it. If you are unhappy with it for any reason, you don’t pay and it will reverse any changes if you so desire. You get a license to use it for a full year and you have access to Reimage’s online tech support.

How Reimage works

Summary

Reimage can save the day when all else fails. You only pay if it works. You get a license to reuse it for a full year. You will save many hours of aggravation and hundreds of dollars over bringing it a repair shop or calling a repair service.

I have used different imaging products before but all of them would have written over my data. I love this concept, and if it goes wrong I can roll back. Wow great idea, and a great product that I must try!

    @ Luffie,

It looks like you need to use Reimage. You should create the restore cd and then run it.

    Handyman Services,

Is the Ultra Iso on another system?

If it’s on the same system, why not just use the CD?

At this point, would you say to upgrade to 7? I am having a lot of trouble with XP now, and am thinking about getting a new laptop with Windows 7 on it. I just don’t know if it’s capable of similar problems.

    @Computer Repair Ventura,

You could probably repair all your XP problems but it depends on your particular problem and budget. You can get a superior laptop these days for as little as $300.

Windows 7 is good. However, the issue is moving your data and programs. Fabs 3 or 4 autobackup can get your data and so can PCMover from Laplink. PCMover can move your programs also. (It’s after 10 o’clock, do you know where your installation disks are :-) .
