The value of a laptop is much greater than the price it cost to buy it. Losing it could mean the loss of significant financial and personal data. It could also expose you to identity theft and other perils. Follow the 5 steps to keep your laptop safe and secure.

What really hurts?

When people steal a laptop, they are not just stealing a piece of expensive hardware. They may be stealing the intimate details of a person’s personal life, financial secrets and details and information that may be crucial to running one’s life. Losing the hardware hurts, but losing the data hurts even more.

Besides the tremendous inconvenience of not having access to important people or institutions at your fingertips, there are other worries. If the thieves use the passwords and other information to do identity theft, they can introduce a whole new world of hurt. Buzzblog reports on the case of laptop which had personal information about Boeing Wichita employees and the tale of woe of one of those employees that was victimized. Multiple accounts were opened with his information and it took him years to clear his name and he is still not free of problems.

The Stages of Laptop Theft Protection

These are the stages of laptop theft protection

Detection – if they don’t know that you have a laptop, they won’t try to steal it. Hiding it avoids problems.

Access – Don’t allow a thief to have free access to your laptop. Stay near it and don’t leave it unguarded. Lock it, secure it and/or alarm it

Data Protection – Back it up so that even if the laptop is stolen or destroyed, you still have your information. Encrypt it so that unauthorized people can’t get at it.

Make it recoverable – Mark it or stamp it with personal identification. Register it with the manufacturer.

Locate it – Use tracking software to find it if it was lost or stolen.

1.Detection Prevention

There’s nothing that broadcasts the fact that you have a valuable laptop more than a fancy special laptop case. The best way to store the laptop when you travel or move is to put it in a nondescript bag or briefcase. eBags sells Pacsafe bags which include backpacks that don’t have any hint that they are carrying a laptop. They are also made of rugged materials which can’t easily be slashed open. Additionally, they offer rugged locks which can be used to anchor the bag to some immovable object such as a pole or heavy table.

Don’t leave it in your car exposed on the seat. Don’t even leave it on a conference table at work unattended.

2.Deny Access

Don’t leave it in an open or exposed place where someone can easily grab it and make a quick getaway. If you are out eating with friends, make sure someone is watching it if you step away. Don’t get up to greet anyone in a crowded cafeteria or meeting place without taking it with you.

Airport security lines are very vulnerable areas. Don’t put your laptop through the security machine until you are ready to go through the metal detector. Don’t go into the metal detector until the laptop is in the machine and take it as soon as it gets out.

Even when you are using your laptop and you want to look at something or talk to someone, it pays to keep a hand or a finger on the laptop so that you are always aware of its status.

An extra level of protection can be provided by installing a lock or alarm. In an office environment, it makes sense to use a docking station which will secure the laptop to your desk.

3.Data Protection

The most valuable part of a laptop is actually the data that is on it. Protect it by backing it up. This is true even for desktop computers. Acronis and Fabs are 2 very powerful and effective backup programs. Back up to an external drive and keep it somewhere away from your laptop when not in use. In this way, even if your laptop is lost, destroyed or stolen you will be able to recover all your data.

Get 15% off on Acronis True Image Home 2011 with Coupon Code FMAATIH15

Online backup is especially useful for notebooks, ipads or laptops that are taken from place to place. They are always backing up wherever you are. However, this should not be the only form of backup that you use for a number of reasons described in . Idrive, Carbonite and Mozy are good programs with Idrive being my favorite.

Protect your personal and sensitive data from others by putting it into unreadable code. Encrypt your data so that only you or someone you trust can see it. I personally do this with Truecrypt which is free. For a full discussion of encryption see Security and Encryption.

Turn off your encrypted volume or drive when your laptop is not in use so that it will not be available to anyone that gets your laptop.

4.Make It Recoverable

If your laptop is lost or stolen, you want and honest finder to be able to return it and you want to be able to prove ownership in case the authorities locate it.

You should register your backup with your computer vendor. They can vouch for your ownership.

Another good idea is to tag it with and identification tag. It will have anonymous return information and may offer a reward for return. They are made to be difficult to remove. ArmorTag is one company that provides this service. Trackitback also provides for tagging and supports a reward and return service.

5.Locate the Stolen Laptop

You can also install location software which will use GPS technology to let the authorities locate your laptop when lost or stolen. The software also allows for disabling the computer or destroying sensitive data remotely. Once you indicate that the laptop is missing, the program will start transmitting its location to a central server and police agencies are alerted and can get it back.

Summary

Follow the 5 steps above to insure that your laptop stays safely with you. A few simple steps can save a world of grief.

There used to be a time when desktops were much cheaper and much more powerful than laptops. This was due to the fact that laptops had to squeeze all the functions of a desktop into a very small space. The smaller size limited the power of the components and also made them more complicated to make and therefore more expensive. However, things have changed and modern laptops are very close to desktops in power and price. The Market Oracle indicates that laptop sales have grown to equal desktop sales.

Laptop Safety Issues

The laptop or notebook has special safety issues which are not applicable to a desktop or much less of an issue.

The laptop owner is faced with the following safety concerns:

physical safety – Since a laptop is ofter carried from place to place it is subject to the danger of being dropped and damaged. Additionally, all the parts are built into one unit and are much more exposed than a desktop. Liquids spilling into laptop keyboard can damage the entire laptop while a desktop’s keyboard may be damaged but the rest of the computer is ok.

theft danger – A laptop is made to be carried and can very easily be carried off by the wrong people. It’s also exposed to less secure environments than one’s home or business. Notebooks can be found in all travel locations and can easily be left behind on an airplane or taxi seat. To protect against theft, see Laptop Theft – 5 Protection Steps

data security – Since the laptop may be left exposed in foreign environments, it is more subject to snooping and tampering by unauthorized people. People who use laptops very often make them the data and information centers of their lives. If stolen, all one’s personal and financial secrets can be used against the owner’s will.

Safety Measures

There are a number of things that can be done to deal with the safety concerns mentioned above. Some involve best practices for user handling of the laptop. Others involve software or hardware to alleviate the problem. These will be discussed in following articles.

Summary

A laptop is an extremely useful and powerful tool. However, it is subject to many dangers. Proper management of these issues will provide many years of fruitful use of this valuable appliance.

Based in Taiwan, Acer is a computer company. They are the second largest computer manufacturer in the world. In the rankings, they are after Hewlett Packard and just a little before Dell. The company is best known for it’s laptops, especially the Aspire and Ferrari series. Though they are currently the bestselling manufacturer in the world, there are just a couple of things you need to consider before you decide to buy any Acer laptops.

One of the most important things you should know is that Acer computers are constructed well outside. Inside, the machinery can be a little flimsy. Their cooling fans are a great example of this. All it takes is one drop and the fan is done for. This will cause problems down the road. It is advised in the event of this happening you get it fixed immediately.

This brings us to another problem. They have a very strict repair policy. They don’t want anyone besides them repairing their machinery. They do not ship parts to stores in order for anyone to repair them. Instead, they want their customers to spend a few hundred dollars just to ship them out overseas. The repair bill itself is not covered either.

Getting wireless Internet might be a problem too, if you are not using a high quality Internet Service. Acer’s Internet manager may interfere with your being able to connect to your own personal router. Please take this into consideration if you are an individual that wants constant connectivity, or depend on it for work.

Despite these issues, Acer remains a popular manufacturer of laptops. Customers like the low prices and seemingly high quality. Acer’s Aspire and Ferarri are two of the better selling lines of laptops around. They beat out Dell and Hewlett Packard by a lot. It is still advised to proceed with discretion no matter what you decide to go with.

Some good qualities about the Acer brand rise above the bad. Their Ferrari series is designed around the business associate. It is much sleeker in design. The Aspire notebook is designed for the college individual. They have a lower price, so the Aspire is designed to provide the same amount of work space at a much lower price. These machines tend to run very well too.

That brings us to the next and probably best thing about the Acer. Parts aside, these laptops run well. If they are taken care of properly, they will last beyond their years. Their processors make web surfing a breeze when you have great connection.

Shopping for Acer laptops can be a chore if you’re not sure what to look for. They do have good laptops. There are just a few things that need to be looked at with a great amount of caution. Ask a trusted computer savvy friend for advice if you are not sure.

Let’s face it everyone that has a computer wants a laptop. Most families are on the go and business workers want to take their work home with them. Then there are students. Students want to be able to go on the internet, Facebook, chat with their friends and still get their work done and printed and off to the teacher’s desk. But for many people owning a big bulky laptop is out of the question for them. If you own a laptop, more than likely it needs its own bag as well for travel.Lets see why cheap netbooks are the new way to go for computer needs!

There is no more heavy computers, laptops to carry around. You dont have to try to compress it in a school. Laptops are usually 19 inches long and hard to transport with you anywhere and the little netbook is a whapping 10 inches. So it is easier to place it where you want it in the house, office or purse for that reason. So the keyboard is smaller and after a little while the adjustment seems easy.

Here a few pros and cons of the Netbook.

Pros:

Nine inches is the standard size but you can find them in 10 inches now

USB slots are everywhere

Sata Drives make it so you dont have to do anything but listen to how quiet it is. Less parts will mean quiet machine

It is thinner and easier to carry with you

They are a lot cheaper than purchasing a notebook/laptop

Cons:

It isnt for gaming, because it has minimal parts in it, they are the basics

the parts are smaller so it is less powerful then a Computer/Laptop

There is no CD rom

O. S. is only XP or Linux

There are different kinds out there. Everyone is starting to make their own version of the original make by ASUS. But that’s ok cause you can still buy them ( any brand ) for anywhere from 200-400 dollars. Still being cheaper then laptops and you still have options available for you just as if you were to order your big laptop online today.

If it is portability and basic computer uses that brought you to the idea to get a laptop then the netbook is a perfect thing for you this year. They are stable and great to use. Make sure you shop around because although they are all in the same price range, sometimes they differ. It depends on if you want a big hard drive or maybe a few more ports on it. Again it is up to you and as the smart shopper make sure you check out your options.

And the more we are able to tote along with us, the better. We can stay connected no matter where we are. That is why a notebook backpack ought to perform lots of purposes apart from book and laptop storage space.
Many notebook owners have gotten use to having their notebook with them everywhere they go. Whether you are a student, business person, or just someone who uses their notebook for recreational purposes, there is nothing that beats computing on the go. Being able to be connected everywhere and whenever is a major draw to owning a laptop computer.

However, a lot of folks neglect to protect their notebook sufficiently. It is imperative to be concerned with the security of your investment. Think about each and every one of the scenarios where they are able to become damaged in your daily routine. Fortunately, many folks have become alert of this and are taking the additional safety measures needed to keep their notebook out of harm’s way.

You should make sure that you have a quality notebook backpack. Many brands include functionality in addition to style. A sufficient backpack is going to include ample padding for the notebook, and padding on the outer surface of the backpack for your backside. Airflow to your backside is an imperative consideration, as is extra room in the bag. How much room will you need? Are you going to use your backpack for school? To take along as your overnight bag on weekend trips? Do you need to keep a change of clothing in there?

Fortunately there are several manufacturers and brands out there and there is a notebook backpack available that can accommodate anyone’s needs. So whether you need a notebook backpack for school, work, or travel, I will guarantee you will find a bag that is right for you.

Whether we shop for bread and milk at the neighborhood grocery store; or for shirts, ties and shoes at a downtown department store or for cars or for homes – we all want fine deals. It’s no different with laptops – most of us want excellent deals. This article helps you locate fine deals for laptops.

Why Look For Good Laptop Deals? Many of us are willing to take time to cut out coupons, to settle into lines winding around the block at the crack of dawn to be among the lucky shoppers who will get to take advantage of a one-day sale, to drive across town to save twenty five cents on a box of cereal while spending a dollar on gas and to fill out countless rebate forms that will ultimately get us refunds that will barely cover the postage it took to mail them in.

Have you ever wondered why we do that? Why are we willing to go through thus much trouble only to save some money, at times a few cents while at other time hundreds of dollars? Is it all about economics? I assume that economics has something to do with it, of course, but the bigger and more motivating factor is rather a bit more psychical and much less obvious.

What I am talking about is empowerment. When we get to pay less for something that we know, or we think we know, is worth more we feel that we have legitimately beat the system, whatever we define the system to be. And beating the system, any system, is empowering. Now let’s look at some ways to find good laptop deals.

1. Build Your Own Laptop – When it comes to desktop computers, you can save money and gain that euphoric feeling of empowerment by finding sales offered by their manufacturers or retailers, by using discount coupons or rebates. There is yet another way of saving your hard earned money on a desktop computer and that is by actually building one yourself. And remember that there is nothing more empowering than a job well done. The same goes for laptops – you can actually build one yourself. Hunt for cheap components and you can build a decent machine that meets your needs. Learn more about custom built laptops in this article.

2. Make Use of Manufacturer Sales – Unfortunately I ought to fill you in on some awful news – building your own laptop is truly not an option when you’re not tech savvy or possibly you only want something out-of-the-box and don’t have the time to construct one from scratch.

Well, you can still save money on laptops by making the most of existing sales (manufacturer sales, blow-out sales, clearance sales, after holiday sales and so on), you can find discount coupons in newspapers and on the Internet, and you can take advantage of rebate programs offered by manufacturers.

Much like the build-it-yourself option accessible for desktop computers, laptop computers have a distinctive savings option of their own and this option is as follows: take your set of needs, match them up to the list of specifications featured in the laptop you are considering and stick to the results.

3. Buy Only What You Need – In other words, buy only what you need and that which you will truly use or else you will be throwing away good money. Do not get sucked into the latest hype and be brave enough to be out of vogue. There is absolutely no logical reason why you have to “keep up with the Jones.” Let me give you an example. If your current computer, whether a desktop or a laptop, has a 50GB hard drive and you have not managed to fill it up even after the three years of ownership, do not be tempted to buy a new laptop with a 200 or 400GB hard drive just because your friend has one. That would be a complete and utter waste!

Conclusion – A fine deal on a laptop would be the one for which you have taken advantage of a clearance sale; the one which accepts the discount coupon you found in your local newspaper; the one that honors a rebate program and the one that offers what you need, no more and no less. Any one of these would make for a fine deal while a mixture of several would make a excellent deal.

Some of the more recent gadgets that are gaining popularity are netbooks. These computers are much smaller than anything else on the market, which makes them very portable and very convenient, and can be used for a range of applications.

Netbooks are not unlike an offshoot from regular laptops. Of course, laptop computers are already very portable, but they can be comparatively large and heavy. These new netbooks were designed to be a lot smaller. In general, they are half the size of a laptop, but still offer a lot of functionality.

In terms of functionality, netbooks can be used for web surfing, emails, chatting and even word documents. Depending on its specs, there are some netbooks that can do photo editing and even video editing system. However, if you are going to use this in media files, you must take note of the specs like memory, hard disk, and the video card.

You can take netbooks almost anywhere, which is another reason they are becoming so popular. All you need to surf the Internet is a decent WiFi connection and you are good to go. You can keep up with your social media or just communicate with friends wherever you go. It’s also a powerful tool for students to take into a classroom setting to take notes or do research.

In terms of price, these gadgets are cheap compared to laptops and desktops. For example, you will be able to get a netbook that would only cost approximately $500. And you do not need to do a lot of set up with these because there are a number of them that are ready to use, compared to desktops that you will need to install or uninstall a great number of programs.

Another positive thing about these gadgets is that they already have webcams that can be very useful in chatting. With this, it is now possible for everyone to have video chat anywhere with their relatives and friends across the country or state.

So if you want to have some very convenient and reliable gadgets, netbooks are something that you can rely on. With its portability and functionality, you are sure to have a good system with you all the time.

As technology becomes smaller and more mobile, there has been an upswellin the acceptance of netbooks. Smaller than laptops, netbooks give you most everything you need at a small price.

Apple Computers is a company that espouses innovation; they are one of the leading innovators of electronic technology. The Macbook Air is one of their latest novelties. This laptop computer is now tagged as the world’s thinnest laptop; it can even fit in a manila envelope. The Macbook Air was launched January of 2008 in the Mac World Conference and Expo.

When closed, the Macbook Air is only 0.16 inches thin. It is oh so sleek in design and very lightweight. It is so thin that it can even fit into a manila envelope. However, do not be deceived by its size, because it holds its own in terms of power and functionality. It comes with a full-sized keyboard, as well as a 13.3?display screen. Its screen is backlit by LED lights and with built in iSight. The Macbook Air also comes with a big trackpad.

Gesture controls is another innovation released by Apple. It is present in all of its laptop product line as well as the iPhone. Like other Apple products the Macbook Air is also built with the gesture controls. These gestures can be done in the touchpad portion of the laptop.

As for its memory, the Macbook Air utilizes the same 1.8-inch 80GB drive used in iPod classic. For additional memory, users can make use of a 64GB SSD for their Macbook Air.

More importantly, the Macbook Air is specifically designed for ultimate portability. Its sleek and lightweight design is perfect for occasional travel or everyday commute.

The Macbook Air is not your typical laptop and because of its unique design some of the features of a regular laptop have been taken out to facilitate the thin form factor. A major component that has been taken out is the CD ROM drive. But this does not mean that you can’t use a CD drive anymore, you just have to connect it externally from the USB port.

Despite being an upgrade of the Macbook, the Macbook Air still lacks some features that the Macbook was initially designed with. These features include the FireWire and Ethernet port, and the security, Cardbus, and ExpressCard slots. The Macbook Air is different from other computer models from Macintosh as it only has a single USB port.

If you are a user who is always on the go or is always traveling, then the Macbook Air is the most ideal laptop for you. To be able to purchase your own Macbook air, you can visit an Apple store near you or go to any Apple retail stores in your area. You can also go online to order a Macbook Air at Apple’s official site. This ensures a safe money transaction, and all you need to do is to relax in the comfort of your own home to await that sleek and portable Macbook Air that you have always wanted.
